Better Planning: Child Care Tips From The Frontline

Hello. I'm a mum with seven children under ten years of age. As you can imagine, all aspects of child care have become the centre of my life. Finding child-friendly products, appropriate play groups and suitable child care facilities are challenges I face on a daily basis. Of course, I'm much more relaxed now after seven children, and I know exactly what products, play groups, and facilities to look for. I figured that other parents might be able to use some of the hacks I've learnt along the way. I hope you find my entries entertaining and informative. Happy parenting!

Benefits of Daycare Centres

by Soledad Gomez

Daycare is a reality for working parents. It may be difficult to leave your child to the care of someone else, but you need to support them. While you may experience guilt from being away from  your bundle of joy, there are many benefits of daycare centres. They include:

Prepares your child for school

Children grow up so fast, and they start school before you can even blink. Enrolling them in a daycare centre will help them transition smoothly into kindergarten. A study carried out in 2016 found that children who attended formal daycare centres performed better in kindergarten as opposed to children who received home-based care. Daycare will help them adjust to a regular schedule. You can rest easy that your child has a structure that will reduce erratic behaviour.

They also partake in activities such as story-telling and play-based learning that enhance their intellectual growth. When they start learning new concepts at an early age, they adapt better to learning at a higher level.

Socialisation and communication

When kids attend daycare, they have an opportunity to socialise with other children. It also helps them learn communication skills. As they are exposed to children of different ages, they can pick up on non-verbal cues from other children. They also learn problem-solving skills, how to share with their peers and how to interact. With home-based care, you have to arrange play dates with other parents and find a schedule that works for both families. With daycares, your children spend time with their peers daily.

Also, your children will interact with other adults and have an opportunity to see adults as authority figures. Adult caregivers can provide encouragement and a positive influence on the kids.

Builds immunity

It is common for kids in daycare centres to develop colds and other infections. This is because they have interacted with other children and are vulnerable to infections. However, this is also a benefit. As they develop colds and other infections, they form immunity against them. If they are not exposed at an early age, these infections can end up being worse as they grow up. When they start kindergarten, therefore, they will be less likely to acquire these infections. Your child getting sick is not convenient, but they will less likely be infected with worse illnesses when they start school. Your home is a safe environment for your child, but they need exposure to environments that will build their immunity.
